Call the PATH Project helpline for free legal help.
The Path Project serves as an information and advocacy center for minors facing difficult pregnancy choices. We help teens under the age of 18 navigate the courts so that they can make decisions about their own reproductive health care.
Florida recently passed a law preventing teens under 18 from obtaining an abortion unless they involve a parent or go to court. This law, known as the Florida Parental Notice of Abortion Act, requires physicians performing an abortion on a minor to notify one parent or guardian in person or over the phone at least 48 hours before the procedure.
While most teens turn to their parents when faced with this difficult decision, unfortunately not everyone has a family who will be supportive regardless of how she decides to handle an unplanned pregnancy.
You may have many reasons for not involving your parents in your decision to have an abortion. If you feel you can't talk with your parents about this decision, you have the right to seek legal help. You have the right to request a waiver from a court to end an unexpected pregnancy without telling one of your parents. You should discuss your reasons with your attorney.
Although we understand that it may be terribly frightening to go to court and talk to a judge about very intimate details of your life, we can help make this a safe and easy alternative for you.
